Students and families in WA want arts learning opportunities. According to 2025 A4A survey results:

  • Demand for arts learning is strong: 89% report student and parent interest is not a barrier or only a minor barrier.

  • Survey findings suggest that barriers to arts access and participation are driven primarily by funding, staffing, scheduling, and structural conditions rather than by lack of student or parent interest

The Arts for All (A4A) coalition surveyed every school in WA state about arts education access and participation:

  • Most schools offer arts education but access continues to be uneven

  • PreK-12 offerings are aligned with state and national arts standards in Music, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Theatre, and Dance. Arts education offerings also include literary arts, applied arts, tribal arts, culturally rooted practices, and storytelling.

  • Washington’s arts education system is sustained by committed educators, strong student interest, and community partnerships.

The 2025 State of the Arts Education Survey provides a statewide view of arts education access in Washington’s K–12 public schools.

💡 Arts Education Access and Instructional Time and Structure Vary by Grade Level

  • Elementary: Most schools provide one hour or less of arts instruction per week, with music typically delivered by certified specialists and visual arts more often relying on general education teachers or volunteers.

  • Middle school: Approximately 60% of middle schools require at least one arts credit, with students completing an average of 1.1 credits.

  • High school: High schools offer the broadest range of advanced, specialized, and career aligned courses.

The Arts for All Coalition(A4A) believes that arts education must be:

💡 Accessible: Arts instruction as part of basic education for all students provided by a certificated teacher with content area expertise.

💡 Continuous: Access to arts instruction throughout elementary, middle, and high school education.

💡 Culturally Responsive: Teaching that invites student knowledge, culture, language, and experiences into the classroom.

💡 Career Connected: Career connected learning helps students make connections between classroom learning, career exploration, creative industry, workforce development, and career pathways.
